Ballater is a pretty Highland village built by a bridge over the River Dee which tumbles and flashes between heather covered hills and Scots Pine woodland on its way to the sea at Aberdeen.
The village has a church surrounded by a green, flower beds and trees, and shops which proudly display above their doors painted Royal Arms saying by appointment to the Queen or Prince Charles, whose Highland summer retreat, Balmoral, is a few miles upstream.
This area of Scotland is famous for its castles, Pictish remains, ancient stone circles, unrivalled walking, golf, and a few miles to the north, Speyside whisky distilleries.
The White House is opposite the bridge. It is a traditional Georgian house superbly renovated by husband and wife design team, Jerry and Shona Ponder, and is available for self catering rental.
